Wall Street Awaits Bank Rescue Plan

Bears could have the upper hand again next week if Wall Street fails to get assurance that major banks can be rescued without being seized by the U.S. government. The Dow breached a six-year low in the holiday-shortened week amid mounting fears that the White House would nationalize banks, thus wiping out shareholders.

Stocks pared losses in the final hours of trading on Friday after the White House said it strongly believed in a privately held bank system. "We don't care about anything but bank details at this point," said Robert Francello, head of equity trading for Apex Capital hedge fund in San Francisco. "It's all about bank details and a bank rescue."

With indexes at multi-year lows, the focus will be on battered banks Citigroup (C.N) and Bank of America (BAC.N), two of the cheapest stocks on the Dow, after a top U.S. senator on Friday said short-term nationalization for some banks was possible.

The fate of both companies will have important consequences for the sector and the broad U.S. economy that is in the throes of an ever-deepening recession, analysts said.
"We're dependent on seeing some stability in the financial sector," said Steve Goldman, market strategist for Weeden & Co in Greenwich, Connecticut.

"Each day we walk into the market and we see them down 5 to 8 percent. It makes it difficult for stocks to advance." For the week, the Dow fell 6.2 percent and the S&P dropped 6.9 percent, while the Nasdaq stumbled 6.1 percent. It was the Dow's lowest close since October 2002.

The economy's troubles are likely to be confirmed by corporate results to be released next week by bellwethers Home Depot (HD.N), Target Corp (TGT.N) and Dell (DELL.O).
Investors will also parse through reams of data next week, including the Case-Schiller index of home prices, sales of both existing and new homes, and Friday's preliminary report on U.S. gross domestic product for the fourth quarter.

The Commerce Department issued an advance report on fourth-quarter GDP last month that showed the economy had contracted by a 3.8 percent annual rate.

The data will provide some clues as to the state of the fragile U.S. housing market, the eye of the economic storm that triggered the credit crunch. "It will be important to watch the home sales data," said Alan Gayle, senior investment strategist of RidgeWorth Investments. "If home sales are steady or they tick up ever so slightly that will be an encouraging sign."

Gayle added that investors should watch what is happening with the "inventory overhang" of unsold homes. But in coming days, the focus will remain squarely on Washington as Wall Street hope for details on a plan to bolster the financial sector, which suffered steep losses this week.

Citing unnamed U.S. Treasury sources, CNBC said the administration will release some details next week on its bank rescue plan. A Treasury spokesman told Reuters he could not immediately comment on the report.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is set to testify on monetary policy before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday and Paul Volcker, a top economic adviser to President Barack Obama, testifies before a Joint Economic Committee hearing on Thursday.

Investors will be watching both officials for any hints about how the government will bolster banks. Details will be key, especially after Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, told Bloomberg on Friday that the option to nationalize banks, although undesirable, was on the table.

Wall Street is still reeling from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's failure to provide any details when he announced a bank plan.

"People are obviously very anxious to know what's going to be done and trillions of dollars are at stake," said Marc Groz, chief investment officer for Topos, an asset management and risk advisory firm. "It's a battle about who's going to pick up the tab.

Long queues outside jewwelerry shops now to sell

Cashing in on high prices: People lining up at jewellery shops at Zaveri Bazar in Mumbai, to sell old gold ornaments. – Paul Noronha
Suresh P. Iyengar

Mumbai, Feb. 20 People have found a golden opportunity in the sharp rise in bullion prices. Even as gold jewellery buyers seem to have almost vanished in thin air, there are long queues outside jewellery shops which buy back old gold ornaments.
Mr Nitendra Jain, Proprietor, Jugraj Kantilal & Co, one of the largest buyers and sellers of gold and silver ornaments in Zaveri Bazar, the hub of gold trade in Mumbai, said, "We have been witnessing huge crowds who have come to sell their gold jewellery for the last ten days and expect it to increase if gold prices continue to rise."
Without revealing the quantity of gold bought back, Mr Jain said, "We are open from 11.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. and buy back whatever people offer to us. Our rates are one per cent lower than the market price for gold."
Mr J.A. Khan, who was the last in a serpentine queue outside Jugraj Kantilal & Co, said, "Though currently there are no attractive investment options, I decided to sell some of my old family jewellery as I feel the prices have peaked and may take a beating in the short term."
Mr Khan, who was earlier involved in the jewellery business, said he would invest a portion of the proceeds in mutual funds and fixed deposit schemes.
Gold prices crossed the Rs 15,500-level to an all-time intra-day high of Rs 15,545 for 10 grams, but ended at Rs 15,490 on Wednesday. It gained further on Thursday and closed at Rs 15,660 on Friday.
Mrs Shrikant Shreelekha, homemaker, said, "I was initially reluctant to sell my old jewellery, but then thought it is the right time to do so. I plan to go in for a new design later when prices fall. I had bought these jewels when gold was hovering around the Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,500 level." Demand down
Jewellery shops which do not buy old jewels wore a deserted look despite the peak wedding season round the corner. Mr Kiran Dikshit, Manager, Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri, said casual buying of gold, particularly for investments and gifting, was just not happening, but compulsory buying, especially for weddings, was taking place.
"In fact, some people have advanced their jewellery purchases, anticipating that prices will go up further," he added.
Mr Prithviraj Kothari, Chairman, Riddhi Siddhi Bullions, said retail jewellery sales had slowed down and wedding demand was low compared to last year. Mr Harish Galipalli, Head of Research, Karvy Commodities, said gold prices are no longer determined by demand and supply but by investment demand and variations in rupee-dollar value.
Since prices have risen by 20 per cent in the last one month, a sharp fall is expected in the near future before an upward march again. R

Martin Weiss: Are Fund Managers Deploying Bull Mkt Rules InA Bear Market?

They should be ashamed of themselves:

* Financial planners and investment advisors who know this crisis could last for years — and who still urge you to buy the stock of companies that a blind man could see are at death's door ...

* Mutual fund kingpins that cavalierly throw your hard-earned money at real estate and construction firms ... automakers ... banks and other companies they know are doomed ...

* Managers at trust funds, pension funds, retirement funds and college savings funds who make themselves richer investing your money in things they know will probably only make you poorer ...

Where do they get the nerve to charge you outrageous fees after they've destroyed your wealth?

Every schoolchild in America knows we're in a recession. Every New York taxi driver knows that banks, insurers, oil companies, automakers and consumer companies are getting killed.

And yet dozens of supposedly smart managers like Fisher Investments, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and bank trust departments are buying and holding investments that have plunged 50% ... 60 % ... or even up to 95% IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS ALONE.

Just look at these losers in their portfolios ...

* Citigroup: DOWN 94% ...

* AFLAC: DOWN 74% ...

* Occidental Petroleum: DOWN 45% ...

* GM: DOWN 95% ...

* Target: DOWN 48% ...

It would be laughable if it wasn't so tragic: With brain-dead investments like those, it's little wonder why, with the markets down about 40%, America's 25 largest mutual funds are down MORE: An average of 55.1%.
But WHY are all these supposedly smart investment experts making such boneheaded moves?

The answer is clear:

They're still using BULL market rules
to invest in this BEAR market!

That's a shame. Because with the right investments, each of the 50% losses could have been a 50% profit ... and each of the 90% losses could have been a 90% profit — all by applying our 11 bear market laws that have made investors rich in previous crises ... and that empower you to confidently use a similar approach to grow your wealth even in the worst of times.

And to help you do just that, I've just scheduled a very special — and completely free — online event ...

Gold: Some Questions And Answers (Larry Edelson)

It's time again for me to answer some questions my readers have. Often, this kind of forum can cut right to the chase, as I directly respond to the most popular questions I'm hearing. So let's get right to them ...
Bob writes in: "Gold's broken above your key resistance level of $929. How much higher can it go, and how fast do you expect it to go up?"

You'll see some backing and filling of the support areas just under $929, meaning you shouldn't be surprised if there's yet another pullback. But gold's next leg up should easily exceed the prior record high of $1,034 an ounce.
Once that is accomplished, expect another pullback, then a move up to at least $1,250.

Longer-term, over the next three years, I expect to see gold reach at least $2,200 an ounce, and possibly much higher. Select gold mining shares and mutual funds should perform even better.

Neal asks me: "Do you still think the Dow bottomed last November?"
Darn good question! Yes, and no. In nominal figures, the November 20 low is still holding. While in real terms, a slight new low has formed. On the other hand, many indicators I watch — such as the advance/decline line, also indicate the November 20 low was THE low.

However, there's clearly too much nervousness and volatility in the markets right now to say with any certainty. I do expect the following though: One more selling panic in the Dow that could bring it down to the 7,000 level. Then, a quick turnaround followed by a multi-month rally that could easily take the Dow back over 10,000.

So unless you are a very short-term trader, or have guidance in that area, I would NOT be playing the short side of the stock market here, either for speculation, or as hedges.

Rona writes in: "Larry, the dollar seems to be defying gravity. What gives?"

On the surface, it looks like the dollar is strong. But stand back for a minute and consider the following: The British pound and the euro are plummeting. So is the Russian ruble and all Eastern European currencies.

Add in all the dollar-denominated debts that are being liquidated and paid off, and the dollar should actually be soaring. But it's not. The Dollar Index is a mere 16% above its record low set last year.

On a relative performance basis, that's terrible upside action in the buck. And it's a sign of what's to come. There's not one shred of doubt in my mind that the dollar is headed much, much lower.

Either forced lower by the marketplace, which is fully aware of the trillions in fiat money that must be printed, or by authorities who have the legal means to change and depreciate the value of the dollar to alleviate the deflationary impact of the mountain of debt out there.

Note: Some say Europe is in much worse shape than the U.S., and in some respects, that's true. But Europe is NOT expected to save the world, the U.S. is.

Couple that with the fact that most of the world lays the blame for this crisis on the U.S. and you have a geo-political situation that squarely puts U.S. authorities on the hot seat, under pressure to devalue.

Moreover, since a global economic recovery depends on a recovery in the U.S. — it actually behooves U.S. authorities to devalue the buck. By doing so, they can ...

1. Stimulate U.S. exports
2. Re-ignite inflation and rising prices, both domestically and internationally.

This is exactly what President Roosevelt did in 1933 when he confiscated gold, raised its price, and devalued the dollar. Almost immediately, the economy began to recover, employment picked up, and both prices and wages started rising.

David asks me: "I saw a report you wrote last month indicating that the price of oil had bottomed. But since then, oil has fallen further. You were wrong. You're probably wrong on deflation too. No?"

My cycle work relates only to timing and not price. When I say something or show a chart that indicates cycles are bottoming, it merely indicates that selling pressure is slowing. And conversely, if I say cycles are topping, it means we're entering a time period where buying pressure should be exhausting itself.

Cycle analysis can be very helpful as a technical tool, but only if one keeps in mind that it relates to timing, and not actual price. Other indicators should be used to determine whether the price action is consistent with the cycle models.

In the case of oil, although its price has fallen further, we remain in a time window where we should see downside pressure reduced, and an eventual turn back up.

Barbara wants to know: "Are there any life insurance policies or annuities that allow you to hold gold?"

None that I know of in this country; however, there are some  excellent programs based in Switzerland. You might consider looking at what the SafeWealth Group offers. They can be reached at:
www.safewealthgroup.com <http://www.safewealthgroup.com> .

Dick asks: "Larry, what are your latest thoughts on Asia?"

I'm in Asia now. There are pockets in Asia that are certainly slowing. But for the record, I will say this: The slowdown occurring in Asia is nowhere near as bad as the western press is leading you to believe.

Here in Bangkok, construction of new office and condo buildings continues almost unabated. Shoppers pack the malls at Paragon and Emporium. In Singapore, where I was last month, there are as many construction cranes peppered around the city as ever. And the world famous Orchard shopping district is practically elbow to elbow with people.

In my opinion, western analysts are most notably wrong about China. Yes, thousands of factories have shut down in China. But those western analysts totally underestimate the Chinese and their ability to handle hard times, as well as their extremely proud heritage and nationalism.

Not to mention the fact that the Chinese banking system is now the strongest in the world ... and that Beijing now has almost $2 trillion in cash on hand and hardly any foreign debt.

There is no doubt in my mind that China is going to turn back to the upside, even before the U.S.

Richard writes in: "Other analysts I read tell me the U.S. doesn't have any gold reserves; that Washington secretly dumped them decades ago and that Fort Knox is empty. Is there any truth to those statements?"
The U.S. Treasury has 261 million ounces of gold worth about $245.3 billion at gold's current price.

A large part of it is still held at Fort Knox, but not exclusively, as in the past. Today most of the gold is actually stored 50 feet below sea level in a subterranean vault under the Federal Reserve Bank of New York at 33 Liberty Street, Manhattan.

Sally's question: "You recommend up to 25% of investable funds be allocated to various gold investments, with the balance, 75%, in cash. But why so much cash when it's only going to lose purchasing power over time?"

Excellent question Sally. I do so for one main reason: Everyone needs liquid cash in this environment. And over the short-term, cash — in the form of Treasury bills with a maturity of less than one year, or a Treasury-only money market fund — is the best way to go.

Later, when I see the real collapse in the dollar beginning, I will likely recommend moving out of cash and into select investments that will benefit from the next big leg down in the dollar.

Steve wants to know: "You've talked about the central bankers of the world changing the value of money. But how could they do that?"

They've done it numerous times before. They did it in 1933, in 1944, in 1971, and in 1995 at the Plaza Accord. Governments and central banks have the ability to tinker with exchange rates between currencies and the value of gold to create new valuations for paper money. They can do it by manipulating the markets, or, in extreme cases, by emergency rule.

It is likely to happen again, and sooner rather than later. If authorities amongst the G-20 do not see signs of a turnaround soon, I believe they will start looking further into a new monetary system that will re-align the world's debtors, mainly the U.S., and the creditors. I expect this to be an ongoing effort and a major topic of the upcoming G-20 meeting on April 20.

I further suspect that a few years from now the world will largely be comprised of three currencies: The dollar, the euro, and a new regional currency for all of Asia

35% Pay-Cuts In Wipro From April

With the recession effects slowly increasing, more and more companies are getting slowly sucked into it and have been coming up with defensive measures to feel the minimum heat. Now, there is news about the major giant Wipro which has always been considered as the safest bet for employees.
It is now being said that the company has decided to go in for salary cuts and if new is to be believed then starting this April, the salaries will be going down by 35% from the existing pays. However, this is the highest meridian so the rest will have a cut anywhere between the range of 20%-35%.
This move is being seen across as a cost saving measure and inside reports say that the employees have no qualm in this new development since they feel that having a job is more than enough at this point of time. However, there are those who are feeling the pinch of it due to their financial commitments and other liabilities.

Entertainment sector to witness boom in next few years

The media and entertainment industry is likely to grow at 12.5 percent
over the next five years to cross the Rs 1,00,000-crore mark,
according to a FICCI-KPMG report on the industry.
"Over the next five years, the industry is projected to grow at 12.5
percent to reach the size of Rs 1,05,200-crore (Rs 1,052-billion) by
2013," said the report released on Tuesday..

The Indian media and entertainment industry stood at Rs 58,400 crore
in 2008, up 12.4 percent over the previous year.

The report added that the economic slowdown has affected advertising
revenues of segments like television, print, radio and outdoor,
particularly in the last quarter of 2008.

The market environment has become increasingly challenging and could
affect the industry this current year too, it said.

The projected 12.5 percent growth for the media and entertainment
industry will be driven by factors like favorable demographics, long-
term fundamentals of the economy, expected rise in advertising to GDP
ratio and increasing media penetration, the report said.

Of the different segments of the industry, television forms the
biggest chunk with revenues worth Rs 24,100 crore in 2008, a growth of
14.2 percent over 2007. Revenues from television are projected to grow
to Rs 47,300 crore by the year 2013, the report said.

The film industry grew 13.4 percent in 2008 over the previous year and
posted revenues of Rs 10,900 crore. It is projected to reach the size
of Rs 16,800 crore by 2013.

At the same time on the sidelines of the Federation of Indian Chambers
of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Frames 2009, the , Minister of State
for Information and Broadcasting and External Affairs Anand Sharma
said The Central Government will take up with the Empowered Committee
on VAT (Value Added Tax) the media and entertainment industry's demand
for subsuming entertainment tax in the Goods and Services Tax (GST),
which is slated for introduction from April 2010.

Mr. Sharma said, "We will consider the entertainment industry's
demand, articulated by FICCI, for inclusion of entertainment tax in
GST itself, so that there is single tax on the industry.

File belated tax return with a cool head!

Have you missed the train?? The tax train, that is!! If you have missed filing your tax return, do not despair...you can still file a 'belated

return'. The Indian tax authorities are always ready to give you a second chance!

In case of financial year beginning 1 April 2007 and ending on 31 March 2008, the due date for filing the income tax return for individuals whose total income exceeded the maximum amount which is not chargeable to tax (and who does not have to get the accounts audited) was 31 July 2008. For those of us who managed to meet the deadline, a job well done - for others, there is no real reason for you to worry. You can still file your return which will be considered as a valid tax return, but just that is would be treated as a 'belated return'.

Some major implications of filing a Belated Return

For the financial year ended 31 March 2008, the belated return can be filed up to two years from the end of financial year, which is up to 31 March 2010. However, there are riders attached to filing a belated tax return. Otherwise, there would be no point in the tax authorities spending so much on advertising the deadline of 31 July 2008.

If you file your return after one year from the end of financial year, that is after 31 March 2009 (for returns pertaining to financial year ended 31 March 2008), there is an exposure to penalty of Rs 5,000 depending on the discretion of the revenue authorities. This penalty will not apply if you file your tax return before 31 March 2009.

CRISIL upgrades ING Liquid Plus Fund to ‘AA+f’

CRISIL has upgraded its rating on ING Mutual Fund's ING Liquid Plus
Fund
to 'AA+f' from 'A+f', to reflect the improvement in credit quality of
the scheme's holdings. The 'AA+f' rating indicates that the scheme's
portfolio will provide 'strong' protection against losses arising from
credit defaults.
Earlier on Nov 14, 2008, CRISIL had downgraded the scheme's rating to
'A+f' from 'AAAf', following deterioration in the credit quality of
the scheme's holdings.
CRISIL's rating is not an opinion on fund manager ING Investment
Management (India)'s willingness or ability to make timely payments to
investors, or on the stability of the fund's net asset values (NAVs),
as the NAVs could vary with market developments.

3. Exceptional items referred to above include the following:

a. The Company has treated the Zero Coupon Convertible Bonds as monetary liability and accordingly restated the liability based on the exchange rate prevailing as at the end of the respective quarter. The amount of restatement for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2008 aggregated Rs.91.75 crores and Rs.434.50 crores respectively.

These amounts aggregate Rs.233.13 crores (Rs.18.74 crores) for the quarter ended December 31, 2008 and Rs.307.36 crores (Rs.84.20 crores) for the nine months ended December 31, 2008 and Rs.266.61 crores (Rs.Nil) for the year ended March 31, 2008. During the quarter ended December 31, 2008, the Company has made an additional provision of approximately Rs.171 crores (USD 35 Million) towards its blade retrofit program. This is in addition to Rs.122 crores (USD 30.34 Million) which the Company had provided during the year ended March 31, 2008.

c. Mark-to-market losses are in respect of foreign exchange forward / option contracts. The amounts for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2008 aggregated Rs.111.40 crores and Rs.202.03 crores respectively. These losses reflect the position as at the period end.

The initial conversion price is fixed at Rs 359.68 per share and Rs.371.55 per share respectively (Face Value of Rs.2 per share) and the same is subject to adjustment in certain circumstances.

5. The Company has not provided for the proportionate premium on redemption of Zero Coupon Convertible Bonds, due 2012, since the Company believes that the same is contingent in nature. The proportionate premium for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2008 is approximately Rs.61.46 crores (Rs.Nil) and Rs.273.09 crores (Rs.63.08 crores) respectively. The auditors have without qualifying their opinion, given a matter of emphasis on non-provision of the proportionate premium in their limited review report for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2008. This item does not have any impact on the profit / (loss) for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2008.

("AERH"), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Company has sold 67,010,421 shares (10% equity) in Hansen Transmissions International NV ("Hansen") to funds managed by Ecofin Limited ("Ecofin"), a London based specialized investment firm. Following this disposal, the Suzlon Group has a voting and economic interest in Hansen of approximately 61.28%.

Govt set to revive subsidy scheme for shipbuilding cos

Govt set to revive subsidy scheme for shipbuilding cos

Nirbhay Kumar & Subhash Narayan
NEW DELHI

THE government is all set to revive the subsidy scheme for
shipbuilding companies such as ABG Shipyard, Bharati Shipyard,
Hindustan Shipyard and Pipavav Shipyard, where a part of the cost of
manufacturing the ship is reimbursed at the point of sale.
The finance ministry has also agreed to release the pending subsidy
amount to shipbuilding companies under the scheme, which lapsed on
August 15, 2007, amounting to nearly Rs 5,000 crore, a government
official said. Shipbuilding companies in the private sector got very
little subsidy under the scheme, added the source.
The finance ministry's in-principle approval has, however, come
with riders. It will now not be an open-ended scheme and the subsidy
component would be worked out on the basis of latest projections of
global orders that the home-grown shipbuilding companies are expected
to generate.
"The finance ministry has given its concurrence on the proposed
subsidy, albeit with some conditions. They have asked us not to keep
the scheme open-ended, which means that there will be no further
extension to the scheme. Following this, we are reviewing the earlier
proposal and are in the process of finalising a fresh scheme," a
government official, who did not wish to be named, told ET.
According to an industry estimate, the domestic shipyards currently
have an order book of Rs 22,000 crore compared with an order of just
Rs 816 crore in 2002. In a bid to promote the domestic shipbuilding
industry, the government has extended the subsidy scheme to private
shipbuilding companies. Earlier, only stateowned companies were
eligible for the subsidy. As per the scheme, the government provided a
30% subsidy on all ship sales to foreign companies and ocean-going
vessels of more than 80 m in length sold in the local market.
Following the expiry of the earlier scheme, the shipping ministry
proposed an extension of the scheme for another 10 years. The finance
ministry, however, turned down the proposal saying that the
shipbuilding industry had come of age and was in the position of stand
on its own. The finance ministry finally agreed to extend the scheme
with riders.

Indian Software Industry Looks for Silver Lining in Cloud of Recession

International IT sector attention was last week focused on Indian
software industry apex body Nasscom's annual India Leadership Forum,
held on 11-13 February 2009 in Mumbai, to ascertain the extent to
which global economic turbulence has affected India's hitherto robust
software services exports sector.

The verdict? While attendance and sponsorship was visibly thinner than
at last year's show (unconfirmed estimates put both at about 20
percent lower), and the mood far from euphoric, it's pretty evident
that the Indian IT sector is resolute in its goal of ensuring that the
heartening 16 percent growth of software and services exports
estimated for FY 2008-09 will be maintained in the year ahead.
There is no doubt though that the current economic scenario is being
recognized as truly challenging by an industry habituated to growing
at 30 percent or better, prompting even the usually restrained co-
founder and chairman of Infosys Technologies, N R Narayana Murthy to
dub it "the mother of all recessions."
As the figures and the forecast by Nasscom revealed, the overall
Indian IT-BPO industry (including hardware) is estimated to aggregate
revenues of $71.1 billion for FY 2009 (ended March 31), accounting for
a sizeable 5.8 percent of gross domestic product of the country.
Analysts believe that India's fundamental advantages – low cost and
quality (which Egidio Zarrella, KPMG's global partner in charge of IT
Advisory, described as the "two big punches") – will help India keep
its competitive long-term advantage even in these recessionary times.
That said, the mood was grim yet determined, reflected in the titles
of some of the discussion topics: "Hard Times: Slow economy, sales
slump – Will it get worse? Will you survive?"; "Market Spiral:
Bottoming Out?"; "Making the most of a crisis"; and, "Balancing the
troughs to scale the peaks". Every industry captain that we spoke to
stressed on the need to enhance operational efficiency, improve
employee utilization rates and enter new markets. Engaged to explain
the changing dynamics of an increasingly volatile world, was an
impressive speaker roster comprising global thought leaders such as
management guru C K Prahalad (professor of strategy at University of
Michigan), Shashi Tharoor (former United Nations Under Secretary
General), Rosabeth Moss Kanter, (specialist in leadership and
innovation at Harvard Business School) and Pankaj Ghemawat (professor
for global strategy at IESE).
While there are still no clear answers or silver bullets, most
industry leaders expressed confidence and optimism that the industry
would emerge stronger coming out of this recession. The tone for the
Nasscom summit was set by John Chambers, chairman and CEO at Cisco
Systems, who said that this recession was an opportunity to reinvent,
and prepare for the inevitable upturn. "You will never create a great
company until you face a near-death experience," said Chambers, as he
spoke of his company's learning from past downturns, and how Cisco
used every such downturn as an opportunity to differentiate and
increase market share.
The need to reinvent and grow stronger was echoed by every Indian
industry leader, as they discussed ways to beat the slowdown. Vineet
Nayar, CEO at remote infrastructure management leader HCL
Technologies, spoke of "having to eat somebody else's lunch" in order
to gain market share, while Infosys co-chairman Nandan Nilekani
advocated a strategy of helping clients to extract more out of their
existing IT investments as applicable regardless of market
conditions.

Lessons from the slowdown
Current conditions also offer a great opportunity to get closer to the
customer and build great relationships, as most clients of the IT
majors are in trouble themselves, and are looking for ideas that will
help them improve their market share. Denny McGuire, chairman emeritus
of US research firm TPI, articulated this premise as he spoke of the
need for transforming 'transactions' in the form of projects to
'relationships' that are focused on creating long-term value for the
client.
During the course of the three-day summit, there were several thought-
provoking observations that perhaps call for deeper introspection. Jim
Champy, chairman of Perot Systems, spoke of the need for simplifying
the huge complexity that is an integral part of every IT
implementation today. Champy cautioned that some industry players
could become extinct unless they revisit their business models, and
focus anew on systems and applications that are simple to understand
and implement. In this context, India Inc can learn from the immense
success of companies such as Google, which have built the brand from
ground up by understanding the needs and behavior of the consumer, and
are now leveraging this knowledge in the enterprise market. After all,
every enterprise has a consumer, who needs a system that is quick and
economical to understand, implement and maintain.
With the downturn overseas, the Indian IT services sector is beginning
to look more seriously at domestic clients. But this is no bed of
roses. Alok Kumar, senior vice president for IT at large Indian
conglomerate Reliance Industries, opined that the needs of Indian
enterprises were poorly understood by the Indian IT service providers,
thus slowing uptake. Kumar spoke of the need for IT services majors to
evolve different India-pricing models and demonstrate more
flexibility. "Due to the rigid policies of most IT service providers,
Reliance is now increasingly considering and using open source
technologies. If IT service providers keep at this path, their
business is bound to come down drastically in the Indian market,"
cautioned Kumar. Outgoing Nasscom chairman Ganesh Natarajan responded
that the Indian IT services sector is cognizant of this gap, and in
fact needs to evolve a separate strategy not only for India but also
for other emerging markets including Brazil, Russia and China.
Moving beyond Satyam
Nasscom and the Indian software industry are well aware of the damage
caused to "Brand India" by the recent financial fraud unearthed at
Satyam Computer Services. The issue was alluded to repeatedly at the
conference, and officials were keen to categorize it as a one-off
aberration rather than an indication of systemic problems with
corporate governance in India. In concrete terms, Nasscom announced
the formation of a corporate governance and ethics committee, to be
chaired by Murthy of Infosys. The committee aims to sharpen the
existing code of ethics, values and corporate code of conduct for
industry and emphasize existing regulations and practices on corporate
governance, an official statement said. It will also develop and
create awareness of best practices to be followed by the board, audit
committees and independent directors of organizations.
With consistently rapid growth rates over the last eight years, the
Indian software industry has rarely had time to sit back, introspect
and weed out inefficiencies. The current slowdown is thus also being
viewed as an opportunity to re-evaluate existing models, and gauge
whether the linear growth model is still the right way to measure
growth and profitability.
Clearly, apart from the usual diversification strategies and touting
the 'move up the value chain' mantra, the Indian software industry
seems eager to formulate new strategies that will help it emerge
stronger and more profitable when global spending on IT gets back on
track.

India's fiscal deficit would shoot to about 7.8 per cent not 6 percent

India's fiscal deficit would shoot to about 7.8 per cent if off-budget items like bonds issued to oil companies are included, said Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on February 16 projected a fiscal deficit of 6 per cent, without including the off-budget items.
"The Budget shows that the number is going to be 6 per cent as a fiscal deficit and this does not include about 1.7 per cent, which is the bonds etc, which are not counted," Ahluwalia said in in interview to Karan Thapar on the CNBC TV 18 show - India Tonight.
"This year, that is 2008-09, we started off with fiscal deficit which we thought should be 2.5 per cent and then another half a per cent for pay commission to be 3 per cent," he said.
Commenting on the government not coming out with populist Budget, Ahluwalia said, "Announcing sops in the Interim Budget was not an established parliamentary practice."
The government has been reacting to that crisis through multiple channels and since September upto the second stimulus a lot of action has been taken and fed into the budget, he said

10 Indian idustries do well in reccession

In the current global economic slowdown, every sector of business is
being affected and is witnessing a hard time. But IKON Marketing
Consultants reports that in India there are few sectors which will
grow in this adverse situation..

AS EVERY business sector is affected by present global crisis and
everybody is talking of slow down in business, still in India there
are few sectors which will grow in this adverse situation. Lets have a
look.
1. Food

No one can survive without basic food material like milk, vegetables
and drinking water. Food processing companies will not be affected
much and rather will earn profits by increasing the prices. These are
the basic needs which we as a common man can not produce by our self.

According to Ministry of Food Processing Industry (MFPI), the food
processing industry in India was seeing growth even as the world was
facing economic recession. According to the minister, the industry is
presently growing at 14 per cent against six to seven per cent growth
in 2003–04.The Indian food market is estimated at over US$ 182 billion
and accounts for about two thirds of the total Indian retail market.
Further, the retail food sector in India is likely to grow from around
US$ 70 billion in 2008 to US$ 150 billion by 2025

2. Railway

As the aviation sector has been affect much badly and resulting in
sharp rise in the air ticket rates the frequent travellers will prefer
railways to cut the cost of travelling and this will result in
increased traffic in railways and long queues at railway booking
counters. The freight traffic of Indian Railways has continued to grow
in the last few months, albeit at slow pace, indicating only marginal
impact of the global recession on the Indian economy.

The railways registered 13.87 per cent growth in revenue to Rs
57,863.90 crore in the first nine months ended December 31, 2008.
While total earnings from freight increased by 14.53 per cent at Rs
39,085.22 crore during the period, passenger revenue earnings were up
11.81 per cent at Rs 16,242.44 crore. The railways have enhanced
freight revenue by increasing its axle loading, improving customer
services and adopting an innovative pricing strategy.

3. PSU Banks

As seen in the private sector much of the job cuts due to global
slowdown, its the public sector undertaking (PSU) banks which gained
much confidence due to job safety and security. More and more people
are likely to turn towards government institutions, particularly banks
in the quest for safety and security.

A report "Opportunities in Indian Banking Sector", by market research
company, RNCOS, forecasts that the Indian banking sector will grow at
a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 23.3 per cent
till 2011.

4. Education

As education is considered as the basic necessity and in India it is
seen as a long term investment by parents and with respect to the
demand still there is a huge supply gap. The craze to study in foreign
university among the Indian youth still alive which will prompt
foreign education institute to target India provided vast young
population willing to join. We will see more and more foreign
educational institutions coming up in India in recent coming years.

Huge government as well as private investment is likely to flow into
the Indian educational system. D E Shaw, a US$ 36 billion, global
private equity firm is planning to invest around US$ 200 million in
the Indian education sector.

5. Telecom

People will not stop to communicate with each other due to global
crises rather it has been seen that it will increase much particularly
with mobile communication. With cheap cell phones available in the
Indian market and cheaper call rates, the sector has become the
necessity and primary need of everyday life.

Telecom sector, according to industry estimates, year 2008 started
with a subscriber base of 228 million and will likely to end with a
subscriber base of 332 million – a full century. The telecom industry
expects to add at least another 90 million subscribers in 2009 despite
of recession. The Indian telecommunications industry is one of the
fastest growing in the world and India is projected to become the
second largest telecom market globally by 2010.

6. IT

Recent news shown that Indian IT sector will grow 30 to 40 per cent
next year. And on the other side to survive in current slowdown,
industries have to decrease the cost and for that they will resort to
customised IT solutions which will further boost up the software
solution demand.

India is fast becoming a hot destination for outsourced e-publishing
work. As per a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) report, the
industry is growing at an annual rate of 35 per cent and India's
outsourcing opportunities in the value-added and core services such as
copy editing, project management, indexing, media services and content
deployment will help make the publishing BPO industry worth US$ 1.46
billion by 2010.

7. Health care

India in case of health care facilities still lakes the adequate
supply. In health care sector also there is huge gap between demand
and supply at all the levels of society. Still there are so many urban
areas were you could hardly find any multi specialty hospital. And in
case of metros the market sentiments itself created a need of
psychological consultation.

Healthcare, which is a US$ 35 billion industry in India, is expected
to reach over US$ 75 billion by 2012 and US$ 150 billion by 2017. The
healthcare industry is interestingly poised as it strives to emerge as
a global hub due to the distinct advantages it enjoys in clinical
excellence and low costs.

8. Luxury products

The high and affluent class of society will not be affected much by
this global crises even if their worth is reduced significantly. They
will not change their lifestyle and will not stop spending on
luxurious goods. So luxurious product market will not be affected and
in fact to maintain the lifestyle those affluent will spend more for
it. Luxury car makers are pouring in to woo the nouveau riche (Audi,
BMW are the most recent entrants).

9. M&A & Marketing Consultants

As in the current business slow down survival will be the main focus,
the marketing and management consultants will be called for to reduce
the costs and to show the ways to survive and stay in market. Others
may join hands to fight with this situation together will call for the
Marketing & M&A consultants. In a booming market there are growth
strategies and M&A opportunities to advise on. When businesses are
cutting back, consultancies will be right there to help clients decide
where to wield the axe.

According to Ministry of Commerce and Industry's estimation, the
current size of consulting industry in India is about Rs 10000 crores
including exports and is expected to grow further at a CAGR of
aproximately 25 per cent in next few years.

10.
Media and Entertainment

In current bad times, where people are losing jobs and getting enough
time to watch TV, they will seek entertainment at home and hence
advertising revenues will increase for the commercial channels. Also
businesses like production of religious texts and religious materials,
religious channels will do well. The TRP of religious channels will
increase compare to the other entertaining/commercial channels.

According to a report published by the Federation of Indian Chambers
of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Indian M&E industry is expected
to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18 per cent to
reach US$ 23.81 billion by 2012. According to the PWC report, the
television industry was worth US$ 5. 48 billion in 2007, recording a
growth of 18 per cent over 2006. It is further likely to grow by 22
per cent over the next five years and be worth US$ 12. 34 billion by
2012.

Tax benifts of insaurance schemes

The average life span of an individual has increased in India due to better health conditions, awareness about one's well being and improved

medical facilities. At the same time, the medical costs of treatment and surgery have increased a lot. Therefore, medical insurance makes complete sense, especially where majority of the family members are dependent on one or two earning members, as is generally the case in an average Indian household.

It is a well-known fact that one can save tax up to Rs 1 lakh u/s 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Likewise, payment made for medical insurance u/s 80D of the Act can also help save tax.

As per section 80D of the Act, a deduction can be claimed by an individual in respect of the medical insurance premium paid up to Rs 15,000 for himself and his spouse and dependent children. Additionally, he can also claim deduction for the medical insurance premium up to Rs 15,000 for his parent(s). Further, the aforesaid deductions are increased up to Rs 20,000 in case the premium is paid for senior citizen (65 years or more).

Computation of benefit

Let us understand the above with the help of an example. Ashish has taken two insurance policies, one for himself, spouse and dependent children and the other one for his dependent parents who are senior citizens. He pays an annual premium of Rs 12,000 & Rs 25,000, respectively, for these two policies. Now, let's determine the amount of exemption available to Ashish u/s 80D for each insurance policy separately.

In the first case, he will be eligible to claim a deduction of only up to Rs 12,000 i.e. amount of premium actually paid subject to a maximum of Rs 15,000. In the second case, where he has taken a policy for his parents, he would be eligible to claim a deduction towards the premium paid for Rs 20,000, which is the maximum limit. In total, he would be able to claim deduction of up to Rs 32,000 (i.e. Rs 12,000 + Rs 20,000) in respect of both the policies.

It is important to note that the medical insurance premium should not be paid by cash, to avail the tax benefit.

Dependent with a disability

Further, in case an individual incurs expenses on medical treatment of a dependent with a disability, then he can claim a deduction up to Rs 50,000 / Rs 75,000, subject to the disability of the dependent u/s 80DD of the Act.

Few specified diseases

An individual can claim a deduction up to Rs 40,000 (Rs 60,000 in case of senior citizens) u/s 80 DDB for expenses incurred on treatment of certain prescribed diseases or ailments, subject to fulfillment of conditions prescribed under the Act.

An integral part of overall investment planning

Medical insurance these days is becoming a necessity and one should look at it as an essential investment for the well being of self and family.

These days, many insurance companies provide cashless medical claim facility wherein an individual can get the treatment done in specified hospitals without any payment. The payment for the treatment is made directly to the hospital by the insurance company, subject to the terms and conditions of the medical insurance policy.

Investors of gold ETFs have pocketed over 9% gain in last seven days.

AHMEDABAD: At a time when equity and mutual fund investors are licking their wounds, investors of goldbacked exchange traded funds (ETFs) are
laughing all the way to the banks, thanks to rising gold prices.

As the gold is resuming its secular trends, investors of gold ETFs have pocketed over 9% gain in last seven days. Prices of five listed gold ETFs have gone up anywhere between 7.85 per cent to 9.84 per cent in the last seven days. The equity and mutual fund investors have witnessed an erosion of their wealth by 4.75 per cent as the benchmark equity index Sensex has tanked from 9465 points to 9015 points during the same period between February 12 and 18.

Gold prices have staged an upward journey since the last week of October 2008 as the worries over global economy deepened. If one takes into account the time frame of last four months, gold ETFs have given as high as 34 per cent return to investors.

"Wealth of gold ETFs investors has been increasing due to rising price of underlined gold in the global market . The current crisis in the global market has forced investors and large funds to shift their asset to gold for wealth preservation," said Sandesh Kirkire, chief executive officer of Kotak Mutual Fund.

Gold ETFs are passively managed mutual fund schemes under which investors can buy and sell gold on the exchange. As the gold is traded and the physical form of gold for each unit traded is backed by the custodian , investors need not worry about storage of their gold units.

The combined holding of gold by all these domestic ETFs are around five tonne and asset under management (AUM) of these funds has been rising with spurting gold prices. The combined gold holding of the world's top five ETFs has crossed 1,300 tonne.

SPDR Gold Share Fund, the world's largest ETF, has added its gold holding by 100 tonne in just a week's time. The total gold holding of SPDR now stands at 985 tonne.

As rupee is depreciating against dollar, the returns from the investments in the yellow metal have gone up in the last one year. This is attracting more and more investors to invest in the precious metal. ETF is a good option for investing in this precious metal.

Aviva Life to expand network, aiming for higher marketshare

Aviva Life to expand network, aiming for higher marketshare
In a bid to enhance its footprint in the country, Aviva Life Insurance India plans to add around 60 more branches by next year, taking its network strength to 280, a top official of the company said.
"We will be increasing our branch strength to 280 from the current 219 by the next calender year which would help us to enhance our presence in the country," Aviva India Managing Director and CEO Bert Paterson said. The company was aiming to up its marketshare and having a bigger all-India presence would help it in its endeavour, Paterson said.
In the current year, the company has already launched around six new products, he said adding that a few more products were in the pipeline which would be launched after obtaining regulatory approvals.

"We have already lined up some new products for launch in the market. We have applied to the IRDA and are now awaiting its approval," Paterson said.
"Till date, we have recorded a growth of over 53 per cent and are aiming for an aggressive growth this year," he said.
The company would concentrate on its core business of life insurance and has no short-term or mid-term plan to enter the general insurance segment, he said.
"In India, general insurance is unprofitable. Besides, competition is intense and hence we have no immediate plans to enter the general insurance business," he said.
Within the Asia-Pacific region, India contributes 40 per cent to the group's overall revenue in retail life insurance, he said. The company's most profitable product in the country was Unit Linked Insurance Plans (ULIPS) which contributes over 95 per cent to the total revenue, he said.

TPAs eye tier-2 cities to catch with insurance market growth

TPAs eye tier-2 cities to catch with insurance market growth
Seeking to catch up with the accelerating growth in number of lives being covered by health insurance policies, TPAs are now eyeing the tier-two cities where industry is seeing most of its new business gains.
The third party administrators (TPAs) are organisations specialising in processing insurance claims for various entities and are normally contracted by health insurance firms and companies self-insuring its employees.

TPAs currently have an average service network of about 10 to 15 branches in the country, most of which are in state capitals. In contrast, the general insurance companies, which control nearly entire health insurance product
portfolio, are present in an average of 400 locations.
This huge disparity requires TPAs to aggressively expand their operations to meet the needs of the burgeoning health insurance market, industry experts believe.
Besides, implementation of various government-sponsored health insurance schemes such as RSBY (Rashtriya Swashthya Bima Yojana) demand enhancement of service administration capabilities from TPAs.
One of the major TPA players, MediAssist, is planning a major expansion in its tier-two cities, both in terms of
number of centres and employees, and is also looking to service various government-sponsored health insurance schemes.
"As Indian health insurance sector grows, a pan-India network with locally empowered offices is essential for a TPA to meet the dynamic requirements of customers in terms of servicing capabilities, reach and an efficient provider network," a source close to MediAssist said.
"Our Tier-II operations will place us in a distinctive position to provide comfort to the insurers, hospitals and the insuring public managed by us," he added.

Citi fights bid to cap credit card interest

Citi fights bid to cap credit card interest
All credit card users should make a mental note of a case that has come up before the Supreme Court. The verdict the apex court gives will decide the interest consumers have to pay on card outstandings.
Citibank NA has moved the Supreme Court, challenging an order of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, which restrained the bank from charging an interest rate of over 30 per cent a year to credit card holders who fail to make full payment on the due date.
A bench comprising Justice BN Agrawal and Justice GS Singhvi on Friday said that the matter will be heard on September 8. The court refused to hear the plea of the bank on an urgent basis.
The matter, which relates to a balancing of consumer protection and regulatory powers, assumes importance given the fierce growth of credit card use, overspending and delinquency in recent years. Notably, similar issues had resulted in new legislations in advanced markets.

In an appeal filed through counsel RS Suri, Citibank said that such capping of rates of interest on credit card payment was contrary to RBI policy. The US-based bank pointed out that the central bank in its circular of July 23, 2008 had said that banks prescribe their respective ceiling rate of interest in respect of small-value personal loans and this would apply to credit card dues as well. RBI had clearly stated that banks were free to determine rates of interest on non-priority sector personal loans without reference to the Benchmark Prime Lending Rate (BPLR) and regardless of the size of loan.
"The imposition of an upper cap of interest to a degree turned non-priority sector lending to priority sector lending," said Citibank. Further, "the commission failed to appreciate that the market in India is still at a developing stage and the risk of default is relatively high, and legal remedy has its own costs. An emerging market like India also has a high cost of acquisition and a high cost of servicing an account as compared to other mature markets," said Citibank.
It may be mentioned that in markets like the US, there are legislations like the Truth in Lending Act — which requires banks to state upfront all charges on the product — primarily to enable the consumer to shop around for the best deal. In the UK, the Fair Trade Commission, formed under the Consumer Credit Act, ensures that there is a fair deal between the consumer and the bank.

Banks argue that credit card is a transnational product and the level of interaction between the bank and customer is intensive, for which the bank engages a large workforce to facilitate customer services. For example, Citibank receives 700,000 calls per month on its helplines, in addition to about 65,000 emails and 15,000 letters per month from card holders, said the appeal.

The appellant bank also picked holes in the Commission order, which had said that the penal interest can be charged only once for one period of dafault and shall not be capitalised.
"The interest accrues on the aggregate of the outstanding due amounts for the period for which it remains due and no penal interest is levied. Capitalisation of interest connotates utilisation of the principal amount of the loan towards the payment of interest which is not the scenario that applies to credit card dues. In case of credit-card dues, credit availed of and the entire amount remaining overdue is liable to the payment of interest," said the bank.
The Commission's findings that charging of interest with monthly rates as unfair trade practice was also arbitrary, said Citibank.
"The Commission has no jurisdiction to hold that the charging by banks of interest at monthly rests was an unfair trade practice given that credit card dues are unsecured and of indeterminate tenor, and the levying of interest at monthly rests is in any event harmonious with the monthly billing and payment cycles. When the billing and payment cycles are monthly, it is also of no benefit to the credit card user to pay accredited interest at rests that are not synchronized with the billing and payment cycles," said Citibank. On July 7, 2008, the Commission had passed the order following a complaint by a credit card holder.

StanChart unveils single card for debit, credit transactions

StanChart unveils single card for debit, credit transactions
Customers who until now had to keep two separate cards — credit and debit card in their wallets — can now manage with a single card. Standard Chartered has launched a new card which will provide the customer the choice of the same plastic as a credit card or a debit card. Other banks are also looking at similar products. There are close to 27 million credit cards and 110 million debit cards now. Most banks have been pushing debit cards to their customers by converting their ATM cards to debit cards.
In the case of StanChart, the technology of using the card as a debit or credit cards doesn't rest on the card. It works on the back-end technology of the bank. A customer while applying for the new card — '1Money' — will have to choose an option between a debit and credit card which would be the default option. After every transaction, the customer will get an SMS which would ask the customer whether he wants to use the debit or the credit card option. The customer can do the switch in a 24-hour time frame. If the customer doesn't choose the option, the transaction will be done on the default option of the card.
Internationally, the bank has launched a card, whereby a chip is embedded in the card and when the customer swipes, will give the option of a debit or a credit card. However, such a product cannot be launched in the country as the electronic data capture (EDC), terminals have not been enabled, according to Sai Narain CDK, head consumer transaction banking andstrategic initiatives, StanChart.
In the initial phase, the bank is offering the product only by invitation to its premium customers. Currently, StanChart has 1.3-million credit card customers and close to a million debit card customers. In the recent past, the bank has been concentrating on higher-end of the credit card segment. According to StanChart GM (credit cards and personal loans) RL Prasad, the delinquency in credit cards has been maintained at close to 8% for the past couple of years as against an industry average of 12-14%.

Indians not getting loans in Malaysia: Business lobby

Indians not getting loans in Malaysia: Business lobby
A business lobby of Malaysian Indians has claimed that the government financing agency Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) has not given loans to any of the 200 people, it had recommended for micro-financing after conducting a nationwide survey this year.
"We sent the list to AIM but to date, none of the candidates had received loans," said Malaysian Indian Business Association (MIBA) president P. Sivakumar.

Sivakumar said AIM, which was set up to help all Malaysians, should reveal how much it had disbursed to poor Indians over the last six months.
"It should be transparent by releasing the list. We want to know why AIM is not giving poor Indians a chance to benefit from its micro-financing services," he said.
The report had stated that AIM had helped 190,000 so far, disbursing RM2.6 bn in micro-financing to members, nearly all of whom were women.
Sivakumar suggested AIM set up a special board with representatives from Indian non-governmental organisations to help channel funds.
Meanwhile, AIM consultant for the Indian community, M. Sivalingam, said MIBA should send its complaints to the chairman of the AIM board.
He said AIM would entertain requests from any group or individual who required loans.

IDBI plans to sell home fin arm

IDBI plans to sell home fin arm
IDBI Bank is planning to sell its Pune-based wholly-owned subsidiary, IDBI Homefinance (IHFL), according to a person familiar with the development. A proposal to sell the home finance subsidiary is expected to be taken up by the board of IDBI Bank shortly, the source said. The book value of IHFL at the end of March 2007 was Rs 290 crore. Market watchers say the book value would have increased slightly now. The proposed sale is likely to have been prompted by a view that a separate subsidiary is not required for mortgage lending when the same business is also undertaken at IDBI Bank.
IHFL was previously Tata Home Finance. The name of the mortgage lender was changed as it was acquired by IDBI Bank in September 2003.
IHFL's home loan portfolio as on March 31, 2008 was Rs 2,710 crore, up Rs 563 crore from a year earlier. The mortgage lender, which has 18 branches in major cities, had reported a net profit of Rs 30 crore for 2007-08.
IDBI bank is likely to give the mandate to IDBI Capital Market Services for finding a suitor. When contacted, a senior official of IDBI Bank said, "We are examining various options. We have still not made up our mind."
Recently, Melwyn Rego who was heading IHFL was transferred back to the bank's domestic resources development (DRD) department. MH Kulkarni has now taken over as the MD & CEO of IHFL.
Interestingly, Tata Capital, the latest entrant in the home loan segment, will be shortly filing its application with the National Housing Board to start its housing finance business.

Home A-Loan? It’s a party out there

Home A-Loan? It’s a party out there
Even rising inflation has failed to defer the great Indian middle-class’ aspirations of buying their dream home. Surprising it may seem, but despite the slowdown in the economy, the home loan segment is alive and kicking with possibilities.
According to industry estimates, the home loan market witnessed an average growth of 20-25% in August, thanks to small-ticket buying. And with festive season around the corner, housing finance companies are gearing up to meet an increased demand as they expect real estate developers to dole out huge discounts to lure first-time buyers.
Banks across the board confirmed that they have witnessed a considerable increase in the number of queries from people seeking home loans. “These are typically the ones who are looking to buy residential property in the festive season. They have already been assured by real estate developers of a good discount, and are making now sure that they get their documents ready in time,†a senior banker explaining the phenomenon said.
It should be mentioned that the Reserve Bank of India hiked the cash reserve ratio (CRR) from 8.75% to 9% in the first week of August. Deepak Parekh, chairman of HDFC, the country’s largest housing finance company, believes that with the great Indian middle-class kicking in, home loan market should be able to weather the storms of a slowing economy. “We has seen a growth of 22% in the home loan segment in August, vis-à -vis the year-ago period. People are waiting for monsoons to get over. Already, there’s been an increase in the number of queries for home loans. We expect the market to pick up significantly in October when festivities begin,†Parkekh told SundayET. Mr Parkekh’s optimism is visible in growth numbers. For the April-July period, HDFC saw a 28% growth in the home loan segment. The company’s average loan size this year has been Rs 15 lakh and 95% of the borrowers were salaried employees.
Says Rohtas Goel, CMD of Omaxe Group: “The hike in repo and CRR rate has impacted the demand in the residential market. But this does not change the fact that people need homes and opportunities to invest. It only results in people buying smaller homes in less-preferred locations, which is what’s happening now.â€

RNA to redevelop large Chembur housing colony

RNA to redevelop large Chembur housing colony
Mumbai-based property developer RNA has bagged a Rs 1,000-crore project to redevelop Subhash Nagar Colony, one of the oldest and biggest settlements in Chembur. The project involves reconstruction of 57 buildings built by the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority in 1950. The colony is spread over 40 acres and each building has 36 flats.
On completion of the project, tenants will be rehoused in flats admeasuring 320 sq ft, with 65 sq ft of open space. RNA has already begun work on the project and has given transit accommodation to tenants in five buildings.

Mutual funds - http://mutualfunds.investorline.co.in/
Redevelopment of the city's old buildings is a big business opportunity as the government is encouraging realtors with tax incentives and higher floor space index. The city has some 16,000 buildings that qualify for redevelopment.
Under the redevelopment scheme, old and dilapidated buildings are knocked down to construct taller residential buildings and create more space for commercial activities, thereby boosting returns on investment.
"To support development of this scale, the company has undertaken extensive infrastructure enhancement, like setting up drainage and sewerage systems, underground water lines, recreation grounds, playgrounds and internal roads," RNA vice president Manoj John said.
He claimed that the tenants need not pay maintenance costs as the company has taken care of it. "We have opened a fixed deposit account, which generates substantial monthly interest. This amount is big enough to take care of maintenance and other costs that normally are borne by the society," Mr John said.
Over the past 10 years, RNA has developed 15.5 million sq ft. It now has as much as 12 million sq ft under development across residential, commercial and SEZ sectors.

All those trading in Resurgere -New Scrip listed in NSE-Warning!!

Dear All,

This scrip seems to be a killer scrip. Delivery volumes are abysmal at 2-3% and the traded volumes in both the exchanges are above 2crores share on an average.I am told that this issue bombed in the IPO and subscription was less than 10% and it got closed simply by someone bailing out and the moves of the scrip shows that what was not subscribed is being palmed off at an exorbitant price. I don't really know why SEBI or NSE or BSE(Of KGN Fame!!) are sitting quiet watching the price manipulation in its most blatant format?! Only aftre the horses have bolted they will come in to close the doors it seems to me.

I only request all readers to be discerning and not get sucked into the frenzy and then regret losing money. Though I called correctly on both the days with correct stoplosses for buy as well as sell positions I am really afraid of such shares reminding me of a share called Rupangi Impex.

Better guard yourself- I see no more than the delivery days of Thursday and Friday(Auction Day) for this share to be active.

NSE has very recently seen shares such as Firstwin,Gwalior Chem,Vishal Info,VinCards(restructured) killing a lot of people. My advicw will be unless a share trades for sa decent period of time - say 30-45 days- any one to speculate is only suicidal. I have been told that many clients had put in Preopen Mkt "SELL" orders on Resurgere on Monday-What is the basis?? I am stunned by such ill informed trading pattern.

Another issue had been Ranbaxy in which a lot of people took positions in Sep longs. Looks like the down period for Ranbaxy may be coming to an end with the Open Offer being over. Lets hope things return to normalcy at least hereafter!!

Oil And Stocks: The "Correlation" Breaks Down? When oil goes down, do stocks go really go up?

Oil And Stocks: The "Correlation" Breaks Down?
When oil goes down, do stocks go really go up?

September 2 was the first day of trading after the long Labor Day weekend, and the DJIA opened with a sharp gap up.

That same morning, crude oil started the day with a sharp drop.

So what, you ask? Isn't that how it's supposed to be – when oil goes down, stocks go up? Market analysts repeat this "rule of thumb" every day, in print and on TV – so it must be true.

They do, indeed. But does saying it make it so? Consider this:

"Most pundits were talking mainly about oil this morning [Sept. 2], which was extremely volatile. They tried to explain the strongly higher stock market open by the fact that oil prices were down big. By the end of today's session very few market observers talked about oil and stocks together.

"The reason: both ended today's market session DOWN, once again showing that the supposed negative correlation between the two asset classes is ephemeral (see Stocks and Oil chart on p.6 of the September Elliott Wave Financial Forecast). If these trends continue, pretty soon pundits will be trying to make the case that lower oil is BEARISH for stock prices. Just wait."

– Elliott Wave International, Short Term Update, Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 4:30 PM Eastern.

"Just wait," indeed. If oil drops below $100 (a scenario EWI's Energy Specialty Service considers highly probable), can you imagine news headline like these, for example?

"Stocks Fall As Continued Declines In Crude Indicate Slowing Consumer Demand"

Or,

"Shares of Energy Companies Drag Stocks Down"

Brand Bengal stands to lose Rs 80,000cr

Source-TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Kolkata: If the Tatas go, they will take with them almost everything that matters to Brand Bengal. Image and the big bucks. The first entity doesn't carry a price tag but the second one does: a whopping Rs 80,000 crore in investments.
The immediate loss will be over Rs 5,000 crore, including the investments on the ancillary units in Singur. The list would also include tier-II vendors, who will have no reason to be here once Ratan Tata moves out.
What's more, the Tata brands like Tata Realty Infrastructure, Tata Metaliks and Maithon Power Limited might also take flight, amounting to a loss of at least Rs 10,000 crore. Besides, there are other bigtime investors who are already jittery. Bharat Forge, which had decided to invest big time in Bengal largely because of the Nano plant in Singur, is now in two minds.
The company would have brought in Rs 6,500 crore. This top-of-the-line forging company had signed an MoU with the government earlier this year. Ever since trouble erupted in Singur, their response to the state industries department is: We'll get back.
Brand Bengal had attracted investment announcements of Rs 1,27,302 crore since the third quarter of the last financial year. But this target is now a distant dream.
In case of a Tata pullout, there will be a question mark on the investment from nonferrous metal major Vedanta Group. That will be another Rs 16,000 crore gone.
Then, there are steel majors who would have implemented their projects this year, but are apprehensive now. All these steel majors, including Adhunik (Rs 5,000 crore), Shyam Steel (Rs 8,000 crore), Jay Balaji (Rs 16,500 crore), Bhushan Steel (Rs 4,000 crore), Abhijit Group (Rs 8,000 crore) may not be all that keen to invest.
''None of these steel majors will stay on, once the Tatas go,'' an industries department official said. ''These investments had come after sheer hard work. We had also roped in other automobile majors. Two months ago, they were ready to start work. Now, they are saying they would rather wait and watch,'' he added.
